Gus James Magann

1968 ~ 2016

Gus always said that his siblings "were born out of love, but he was born out of passion," and passionate he was. He loved good food, good wine, family, and friends. Some of his most favorite times were spent sitting around the dining room table on Sundays after he had made a fabulous meal for everyone, and the wine and conversation flowed. He was passionate about Notre Dame, the Packers, and his beloved Yankees. Mostly, he had an unabashed adoration for his daughter, Josie.

Born on July 24, 1968 in Dugway, Utah to parades and fireworks, he was certain that the celebrations were for him. He grew up in Dugway and was student body president, captain of the basketball team, and quarterback. He would point to the sun setting in the west and say "that is where Gus Magann ran for touchdowns." He loved his Dugway family made of both family and friends especially Tony Moe, Danny Barbero, Julie Barbero, and Michelle Dyer.

Gus was a life long learner who would read philosophy as he exercised. He earned a bachelor\s degree from Gonzaga University, a MBA from Westminster College, a culinary arts degree from the Institute of Culinary Education, and a Masters of Wine. He was a Certified Wine Educator and served as a California State Wine Judge. His love of good food and wine led to his position as President of Vine Lore, a wine brokerage where he partnered with Tracey Thompson. The people he worked with there were a second family. He was also the executive chef and owner of D.B. Coopers for 5 years.

On October 7, 2006, he married the love of his life, Nicole Svee, in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Park City, Utah. Together they celebrated any chance to gather with family and friends whether it was roasting a goat for Easter, savoring the Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve, filling the house for Thanksgiving, or simply enjoying Sunday dinners. Gus welcomed into his life two step-children, Thomas and Quinn, and loved them both very much and considered them his own. When his daughter Josephine (Josie) was born, he was enraptured. No father had more love for a daughter than he did.

Gus is survived by his wife, Nicole, his son Thomas, and daughters Quinn and Josie. He also leaves his brothers Mike (Linda), Tony (Jody) and sister Kelli (Mike); as well as his nephew Nick (Gabby) and niece Gina (Murphy) and three great nieces and one great nephew. He is also survived by his Godparents Dominick and Janette Welch. Preceded in death by his parents, Josephine Welch and Neil Magann.
