Leona Marti

1922 ~ 2014

Leona Marti, 91, known to her friends as Lee and as Nonie to her nieces and nephews, passed away on February 22, 2014. She was a loving daughter, sister and aunt. Leona was born on November 2, 1922 in Logan, Utah to Rudolph and Ella Hahn Marti.

As a child, Leona moved to Salt Lake City where she graduated from South High School, LDS Business College and attended the University of Utah. She began her career working for ZCMI as a buyer. Trips to New York City were the first of many as she soon joined the U.S. State Department, Foreign Service. Over 28 years she had assignments in Germany, Philippines, Cuba, Luxembourg, San Francisco, USSR, Thailand, Washington D.C. and Indonesia.

Leona was a woman of intelligence, compassion, and integrity with a strong work ethic. She was devoted to her family and generous in nature. She helped support and care for her mother as well as becoming the legal guardian to two of her nieces. Her great-nieces and nephews always looked forward to summer days in the pool at Nonie's house, and the entire family enjoyed the traditional Christmas afternoon gatherings she hosted. Traveling to new places, especially with family and friends, and attending the theatre, symphony and ballet were some of her favorite past times. In retirement, she also enjoyed volunteer work and associating with the Foreign Service group in Utah and with friends from Jefferson School.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Leona is survived by her sister, Dorothy Bradley, and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her, parents, sisters, Margaret and Esther, and brother Rudolph.

The family wishes to express appreciation to the caregivers of Legacy Village-Taylorsville for the years of love and care she received. She will be deeply missed.
