John Lorin Shelton

1923 ~ 2013

John Lorin Shelton, 90, passed away on November 29, 2013 in Washington, Utah of natural causes. Born March 7, 1923 in Sugar Salem, Idaho to George Raymond and Orpha Gertrude Shelton. Lorin was the second youngest of six siblings. He married LaVina Blunck (deceased) with subsequent spouses Dorothy Howe (deceased), and Fern Bucherich (deceased). On July 6, 2002, he married Merilyn Child-Bonneville, later sealed in the St. George Temple February 5, 2004.

Lorin grew up in Sugar Salem (near Rexberg, Idaho) where he graduated from high school. It was at this time he learned to love sports and was designated an all-state basketball player both in his junior and senior years. He enlisted April 19, 1943 and served honorably for two years in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II. Lorin established his career in retail business eventually moving to Salt Lake City. He owned and managed Pehrson's "hardware and appliances" in the Cottonwood Mall for 30 years. He was an active member, as well as president, of the Cottonwood Mall Association. He also served as an active member of Rotary International for over 25 years. Lorin loved to play golf with his many friends and was an avid fan of the Utah Jazz and BYU athletics. Lorin was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had opportunity to serve in many positions. He was a devoted father and husband throughout his life. He saw as his greatest accomplishment the rearing and support of his sons, their families and many grandchildren. He also greatly loved the children and grandchildren of all his spouses. He was non-judgmental and accepting of all. Lorin was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings: Leota, Milrhea, Ross, Ralph, and Mary; and his son, John. He is survived by his wife, Merilyn, of Washington, Utah; his son, Michael (Donna) of South Jordan, Utah; his son, Bob (Pyper) of Salt Lake City, Utah; and his 14 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. Lorin had a special fondness and love for his sister Milrhea's children: Layle (Glenda), Marvin (Karen), and Rita (Tom); as well as Merilyn's daughter, Kelly (Ron) and granddaughter, Jill (Jim).

Funeral services will be heldWednesday, December 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 E. Dimple Dell Rd. (10600 S.), Sandy, Utah. A viewing will be held from10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. followed by a celebration of his life at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary. Interment will be at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, Utah.
