Matthew James Quayle-Herren

1983 ~ 2017

With broken hearts, we mourn the loss of our son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend: James. After years of valiantly fighting, he succumbed to his battle with addiction on Sunday, April 16, 2017.

Matthew James Quayle-Herren was born in Salt Lake City on April 10, 1983, to Joyce Quayle and Beau Herren. James lost his father at an early age, but was blessed to have been guided by two stepfathers: Brent Wiggins and Don Pihl. As a boy, he loved practical jokes and hiding around corners to scare people. As an adult, he was hard working, efficient and meticulous in every task he undertook. He was very service-oriented, and never hesitated to lend a hand when he saw an opportunity (or was volunteered).

A true connoisseur of food, James preferred a home-cooked meal to the finest restaurants, especially if it was made by his mother. James was fiercely loyal to his family and friends. Eager to please his loved ones, he would often find small ways to surprise them and express his love and gratitude. He can be remembered by all for his sparkling white smile and matching shoes as well as nicely pressed t-shirts and mint-condition hats. He was constantly primping, frequently winking and blowing kisses, and never forgot to say I love you before leaving.

James was very tenderhearted and loved children and animals. He spent hours playing catch, games, and even dress up with his nieces and nephews. He would also use his compassion and patience to feed, rescue, and train any animal he came across, from cats and dogs to chickens and horses.

James shared his father's love of nature yet had an unnatural attraction to fast cars, motorcycles, big stereo systems, loud exhaust and anything else that drew attention. He left us far too early and our lives will never be the same.

He is survived by his mother Joyce Quayle-Pihl, his step fathers Don Pihl and Brent Wiggins, his older siblings and their families: Leah and Steven Wynn; Rachel and Christian Lott (Natalie, Katie, Elsie, Spencer); Anna and Paul Ayala (Michael, Ariana, Taylor, Audrey, A.J.); Joseph and Pamela Wiggins (Lilia, Lacey, Matthew); David Pihl (Emily, Jacob, Kate); Michael and Mary Ann Pihl (Spencer, Sam, Nick, Allison, Thomas); and many dear relatives and friends. He was proceeded in death by his father William Ervin (Beau) Herren and we are comforted that after many years they can be together again.
