Claudia Free Mathis

1929 ~ 2015

Our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother Claudia Free Mathis passed away peacefully at home on May 26, 2015 after a courageous battle against cancer. Claudia was born in Salt Lake City on October 28, 1929 to Huron Reeve Free and Mary Salisbury Burton Free. She married Lloyd George Mathis in the Salt Lake Temple on June 28, 1948. She is survived by her husband Lloyd, daughter Susan Mathis Voorhees (Robert) and son, Scott L. Mathis (Margaret), as well as five grandchildren, Matthew Robert Voorhees, Rory Scott Mathis, Ethan Ray Mathis, Sophia Louise Mathis, and Trajan Scott Mathis; and many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

Claudia graduated from East High School in 1946 and attended the University of Utah. She was successful at everything she put her mind to. Claudia worked with several engineering companies in Salt Lake City and was a partner in The Consortium Engineering before relocating to California. She retired from Martin Marietta, Denver, Colorado in 1993.

Claudia loved nature and claimed Mt. Olympus as her own by climbing to the top with her husband Lloyd when she was 49 years old. She loved travel and enjoyed several trips to Alaska, Hawaii, the Northeast, and fulfilled a lifelong dream to travel the Panama Canal.

Music always brought her great joy. She was an accomplished pianist as well as enjoyed listening to her grandchildren play piano and guitar.

She was a voracious reader and loved to learn. She enjoyed her association with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.
