Xan Clemmer Kali

1966 ~ 2017

Xan Clemmer Kali, 50, was born on Father's Day, June 19, 1966, Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia, to Terry Paul Clemmer and Janice White Clemmer while her father was in medical school. She passed away at home on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, Salt Lake City, Utah. Married Henry Ku'uleialoha Kali of Waimea, Kaua'i in the Hawaii LDS Temple in Laie, Oahu, June 6, 1987. He preceded Xan in death on October 11, 1996, in Salt Lake City, interred at Waimea, Kaua'i.

While in Salt Lake City, Xan attended Uintah Elementary, Clayton Middle School, graduating from East High School and East High School LDS Seminary. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Social Work from Brigham Young University-Hawaii, completed her Master of Social Work from the University of Utah, and had started a Master of Public Administration degree program, which was interrupted because of breast cancer and aggressive, intense therapy. Xan used her education successfully in her career until assaulted by a young client rendered Xan in continual, unresolved pain.

She had been active in school athletics all her life, particularly soccer, basketball, and volleyball while at East. Xan served as the East HS Estonia Yearbook editor after being a staff member for several years. During her first year at BYU-Hawaii, she was a candidate sponsored by the BYU-Provo then functioning Multicultural Education Department for the Junior Miss Pageant of Utah. She had a boisterous, enthusiastic laugh and had a great sense of humor.

Xan was involved in numerous professional organizations and volunteered in additional activities such as the Sundance Film Festival, ComCon gatherings, Susan Komen Breast Cancer events. She enjoyed reading, music, cooking, gardening, attending the Cedar City Shakespearean Festival, the Utah Opera and Musical Theatre Festival in Logan with her family and the Sons of the Utah Pioneers-Mills Chapter, fishing, traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, the Holy Land, and Egypt.

Her tenacity for survival has been inherited from her ancestors who include a great-great-great grandfather Billy Chinook Parker who was a ward of John C. Fremont, Surveyor of the West in the 1843 Campaign, who became Chief of his tribe and a 1855 and 1865 Treaty signer for the Confederated Tribes of Middle Oregon, tribes of the Eastern Woodlands, and stalwart Mormon pioneers who entered the Salt Lake Valley with the original Brigham Young 1847 Company (George Curtis), and the Mormon Battalion (three Curtis brothers) and the Martin Handcart Company (Mary Openshaw). Her overall heritage includes ancestors from the Philippines, Native American tribes, British Isles, Scandinavia and Central Asia.

Xan is survived by her parents, Terry P. Clemmer, M.D., and Janice White Clemmer, Ph.D., Ph.D., J.D.; brother Kori and wife Keyes Jones Clemmer and children Victoria Rose-Evelyn Jones, David-Sebastian Lewis, Anna-Julia Rose Souto; former spouse Monica Hall Clemmer-Gaffin (Michael) and children Alexander Paul Clemmer, Christopher Clemmer, Nathan A. Clemmer, Kyrie Elizabeth Clemmer; daughters Maile Kealoha Noelani Kali and Samuel Beck Castagna and children Zoe Leilani Kali and Koa Michael Ku'uleialoha Castagna; Keawe Hokulani Kali; Lehua Napua O'Nalani Kali Barefoot and Cody Neil Barefoot and Kya Hanalei Barefoot. In-laws Henry Kalani Kali and Elizabeth(Liz) Kali; deceased mother-in-law Betty Jane Kuupio Walker Loando Kali; siblings-in-law Douglas Kalani Kali, Jenn Lokilani and Fred Oligo, Joseph Kamali Kali, Marlene Lehua Kali, Sherlene Lemoni Kali, Roi Kanoe Kali, Timothy Healoha Kali, Daniel Kaipo Kali, Elizabeth Leinanai Kali. Maternal grandfather Cecil Howard Seyler, the late Aradonna Aguilar White Seyler, aunts Nancy Marie Seyler, Myrna Lois and Clifford Courtney, Carroll Jean White Bankston, Ann Seyler, Dean Michael and Jeannie Seyler, numerous cousins and relatives in Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, and Oklahoma.

Funeral will be held Saturday, April 22, 2017 with a viewing 12:30-1:30 p.m., and services 2-3 p.m., followed by cremation at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City.
