Spencer Preston Felt

1924 ~ 2016

Spencer Preston Felt, Jr. was born to Spencer Preston Felt, Sr. and Ruth M. Howell Felt on February 27, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died peacefully at home at the age of 92 on August 4, 2016 in the company of loved ones. He married his sweetheart Barbara Schenk on June 16, 1945. They were married for more than 70 years. They loved to travel the world together and with their dear friends.

Spencer was a WWII hero. Second Lieutenant Felt served as a pilot in the Army Air Corp and was shot down on December 18, 1944 over Nazi occupied Poland. Spencer evaded capture until rescued by Polish partisans. He was hidden from the Germans for over five weeks and was eventually picked up by the advancing Russian Army. On a Russian train Spencer celebrated his 21st birthday with a \"cake\" made of white bread, sugar and snow. His family and friends did not know of his survival for a number of months.

After his return, Spencer worked at National Filter Media for over 40 years, eventually becoming President and CEO of a very successful company.

Spencer served his community by working on a number of boards and foundations, including the Utah Arthritis Foundation, the Salt Lake Rotary Club, Board Member and Treasurer of the Alta Club and Board Member and President of the Salt Lake Country Club. He also was a very proud member of the Dirty Shirts, a club where the average age was 85.

Spencer was an avid golfer, fisherman, upland bird and waterfowl hunter. His interests live on with his sons today. Some of his most memorable trips were safaris to Africa. Spencer\s proudest accomplishments were his three children, all of whom got off his wallet after college. During his last year, as his health declined, the visits from his family and friends were a great joy. The family wants to thank the caregivers from Home Care Assistance for their thoughtful care. We especially thank his grandson, Matt, for his loving care during Dad\s last years.

Spencer was preceeded in death by his beloved Barbara. He is survived by son, Paul (Janet), daughter, Marianne and son, Doug (Kathryn), grandchildren, Elizabeth, Matt, Jeremy, Mara, Mano Richard and Valerie (Beau), with a great-grandson on the way. In lieu of flowers please contribute to your favorite charity in Spencer\s memory.

Funeral services will be held at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 11. Respects may be paid on Wednesday evening August 10 from 5:30-7:30 PM at the same location.
