David Harlow DeVol

1945 ~ 2016

David Harlow DeVol Jr., passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016, in the Veterans' Memorial Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, at age 71. David was born August 11, 1945, in Richmond, CA, to David Harlow DeVol Sr. and Elizabeth Thelma Odell DeVol. He grew up in Clearlake Highlands, CA, and graduating from Clearlake Highland High School in 1964. After graduation, he started college at the American River Junior College in Sacramento, CA. During this time, he became a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and joined the army for three years, serving a tour of duty in Vietnam.

After his service in the military, he settled in Modesto, California, where he met and married Sue Ann Laird. They were married August 11, 1970, in the Salt Lake City Temple and returned to Modesto until 1971. Then they decided to move to Utah to raise a family and finish college. David graduated from Weber State College in 1985.

David and his wife settled in Clinton, UT, where they raised four children. He was a master craftsman in woodworking. He was taught by the "Old Swedes" at Ace Mill and Fixture in Logan, UT, and learned how to bring lumber to life. He took his skill to Ogden and worked at Anderson Mill and Fixture before starting his own cabinet shop. He also taught woodworking at Weber State as an adjunct instructor while attending classes.

He is survived by his four children Mathew, Kevin, Christine, and Marcie and his nine grandchildren: Peter, Nadia, Evan, Roy, Alex, Bobbie Jean, Hailey, and Daniel.

A memorial service will be held Friday, December 30, 2016, at 10 am at the Rushton Heights LDS Ward building, 1550 Rushton Street, Ogden, Utah 84401.
