Dorothy Edna Nowak Haywood

1916 ~ 2018

Ft. Collins, CO--A bright light was quietly put to rest after a long and eventful life. Dorothy Edna Nowak Haywood was born January 31, 1916 to Edith Raynor and Edward John Nowak in Brooklyn, NY. Dorothy was a faithful servant to God and her family. She recently turned 102, surprising us all and outliving her husband, G. Lawrence Haywood and her younger sisters, Adele White, and Mildred Granelli. She leaves behind her remaining family--two sons Donald, Fort Collins, CO and Robert, Layton, UT; daughter-in-law's, Kathleen and Susan; and one brother-in-law Kenneth White. She was "Grandma Dot" to Kim, Robyn and Eden; "GG" to Lauren, Sean, Brooke, Laurelle, Ori, Yarrow and Linus; "favorite" Aunt Dot to many nieces, nephews, "great and grand"; and Dottie, or Dorothy to her many neighbors and friends.

She attended school and Business College in Brooklyn and married Larry there in 1941 becoming his "war" bride. She and Larry traveled to the many places he was stationed stateside in WWII. When it ended, they settled in Connecticut and eventually Latham, NY. In Latham she was active in local politics, the First Presbyterian Church of Troy, NY, and raising their two sons. The family often spent summers tenting and camping around the US. For many years, she and Larry held a Neighborhood Christmas Open House for all their friends and family with plentiful food and drink. They also belonged to a Square Dancing group.

After making numerous trips west to visit their sons and families, she and Larry left Latham and moved to Bountiful, UT in 1987. Larry passed away later that year. While still in Utah, Dorothy was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Salt Lake City, PEO, and Eastern Star. She was a life-long Bridge player, for as long as she had partners. Often she would make new friends on cruises, plane rides and wherever she traveled. Many beautiful counted cross stitch items she crafted were gifted to family and friends. Dorothy resided her last few years in Fort Collins, CO where she was given loving care by two very special people, Ron and Venita Christian. She lived a full life and will be missed and lovingly remembered by many.

Funeral will be at the First Presbyterian Church, 12 C Street, SLC, UT 84103 on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 11:00 am with viewing 9-11:00 am that morning. Following the service there will be refreshments. There will be a brief graveside service at 2:30 pm at the Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch in South Ogden, UT with burial beside her husband. Afterwards, family and friends are invited to a gathering at the Haywood's at 2158 E 1075 N, Layton, UT 84040.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Dorothy's name to PEO (www.peointernational.org/contributions-peo-foundation) or to her local PEO Chapter AH, or the Humane Society.
