Eva Bustamante Smart-Dickman

1917 ~ 2015

Our dear mother passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2015, at the start of a beautiful spring day in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born September 10, 1917, in Cusco, Peru to Maria Rosa Angulo Vera and Cesar Bustamante Alvarez. She was raised in Lima, Peru, where she studied languages, translation and the arts, preparing her for a career as an interpreter and a life centered around diplomatic service in numerous countries. As a young adult she moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked at the United Nations and then met and married Joseph Heber Smart. They lived in Washington D.C, where their son Christopher Joseph was born. They later lived in many parts of the world during our father's diplomatic career. Cecily Eve was born in Lisbon, Portugal, and Geoffrey David was born in Lima, Peru.

She had a long life, which culminated in Salt Lake City, Utah where our parents moved to in 1960. In Salt Lake, she taught English as a Second Language and maintained a rich cultural and social connection with many organizations and friends who cherished her a great deal, appreciating her beautiful style, grace and dignity. She was a member of the Ladies Literary Club and other community organizations focused on the arts. To all of us, she was a source of love, strength and courage. She was proud of her heritage and upbringing; teaching us that family was of primary importance. All of her children and her dear sister, Irene, were at her side, along with cherished friends who loved her, when she peacefully passed at the end of her long and successful life.

After our father passed away in 1993, mother continued her work, and maintained her cultural and social activities, enjoying the ballet, arts and community life. In 1998, she met and married Sherman Dickman, Professor Emeritus of the University of Utah. They had a wonderful life together until Sherman passed away in 2006. They both loved to travel and visited many parts of the world together for 8 years. They gave an example of how truly beautiful love and acceptance can be between two people.

She is survived by her sister, Irene Gonzalez Secada and her children, Christopher Smart, Cecily Smart Davis (Max), and Geoffrey Smart (Kim); her granddaughters, Olivia Patricia Davis Sherill (David) and Tiana Josee' Smart, and her great grandchildren, Antonia Marie Sherill, Julia Anne and Michael Kent Sherill and many nieces and nephews in the United States and South America. She was preceded in death by her dear brother Cesar Gonzalez Angulo.

We wish to express a special thanks to Marietha Lazaro, Pilar Carrasco, Andrea Chavez, Evelyn Ivie, and Anzhela Azizan, who were so loving and caring toward our mother. Our thanks also to the nurses and staff of Millcreek Hospice.

Services for mother will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah, at 2:00 p.m., followed by internment at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 200 "N" Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. A gathering of family and friends will follow.
