Joy Madiliene Webb Rigby

1933 ~ 2016

Our beloved wife, mother, sister, devoted grandmother and great-grandmother Joy Madiliene Webb Rigby, 82, passed away on Friday, February 19, 2016, the anniversary of one of the happiest days of her life- the birth of her youngest daughter. She was born on March 8, 1933 to Henry Lolan Webb and Lola Louina Hoke in Glace, Monroe County, West Virginia. She was the oldest of twelve children. After graduating from White Sulphur High School, and with encouragement from her grandfather Alihue Hoke, she left home to achieve a dream to graduate from Brigham Young University. She was the first in her family to graduate from high school and college. She taught elementary school in Alaska and Utah and in her later years she was a volunteer teacher at the Institute of Religion at the University of Utah . Not long after graduating from BYU, Joy achieved another dream to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1958, she served in the Australian Mission under President and Sister Erekson. Joy and her devoted husband, Dr. Odell Franklin Rigby, raised their six daughters in Salt Lake City and shared their unwavering testimonies and love of the Savior and their gratitude for eternal families. Later they served a mission together in the Dominican Republic. Odell and Joy returned frequently to White Sulphur Springs to visit with her family and friends at class and family reunions. They also loved gathering their children, 21 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren for family reunions to build a strong bond of unity. Other than her parents, Joy was preceded in death by sisters: Alma Ruth, Lily Grace, and Betty Sue Webb, Donna Webb Kelly Radford, and sister-in-law Gladys Webb. Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Odell and six daughters and their families; Elizabeth (David) Hatch, Jennifer (Randall) Cardinal, Stephanie (Richard) Eccles, Rachelle Rigby, Heather (Shane) Kester, Kimberly (Brent) Mosher, 21 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving brothers and sisters Billy Webb, Nancy (Bill) Barton, Virginia Webb, Barbara (Maxwell) Bostic, Valerie (Malcolm) Allen, Steven (Mary Ann) Webb, Evva Jean (Jeff) Tucker.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 25, 2016 at 12:00 Noon in the Monument Park 15th Ward Chapel (1320 Wasatch Drive). The family will meet with friends on Wednesday, February 24th from 6 to 8:00 PM at Larkin Sunset Lawn (2350 E. 1300 S.) and an hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
