He was born on January 19, 1956 in Las Vegas, Nevada to Lawrence K. (Ladd) and Glenna W. Hanson. He spent his early childhood in Las Vegas and moved to Utah where he graduated from South High School, lettering in football and track. He later graduated from ITT Technical College in Electronics.

He married his high school sweetheart, Karen Bailey, on September 23, 1975 in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of 5 children: Jeff, Mindy, Brandon, Brynn and Matt. Above all else, he was devoted to his family. He was an amazing dad and had a special connection with each of his grandchildren.
