Edward Bonner, 92, passed away March 20, 2014 in Bountiful, Utah surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 3, 1921, the son of James Bonner and Johanna Van Loon. He was the youngest in a family of nine children. Upon graduating from West High School, he attended the University of Utah, where he earned his B.S., M.S. and Ed.D. degrees.
He was a veteran of World War II where he served as a commissioned officer with the U.S. Eight Army Field Artillery in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of operations.
He married Carolyn Marguerite Shurtleff on December 23, 1952. He was a loving, dedicated husband, and cared for his beloved wife until her death on June 16, 1993.
Edward was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In 1949, he was called to serve as a missionary in the Eastern States Mission where he served as Branch President in Butler, PA. Throughout his life he continued to serve in various callings in the Salt Lake Twenty-Third Ward, Kenwood First and Second Wards, and the Wilford Stake.
He spent his entire professional career with the Salt Lake City School District. He taught at Grant, Franklin, and McKinley Schools. He later became Principal at Riverside, Highland Park, Whittier, Bonneville, and Lowell Elementary Schools. Dr. Bonner was respected and loved by the students, faculty, parents, and community at each of his school assignments.
He also served on many educational development committees and school administration associations, including as President of the Utah School Principals' Association. His leadership was greatly valued.
Edward was a quiet, peaceful man of great integrity, without guile, who was an example of love, patience, humility, and kindness. He will be remembered for his concern and respect for all people, and his compassion and sincere regard for others. All who knew him have been blessed through his generosity, strength, caring, wisdom, and guidance.
Special thanks to the staff at Barton Creek Assisted Living and the many dedicated health care professionals who not only provided wonderful care, but showed a sincere interest in his health and well-being. He also greatly enjoyed the visits of family, particularly his grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as his many friends and acquaintances, during the last few years.
Edward is survived by sons Edward W. (Nora), Bountiful; David J. (Lori), Lehi; Nine grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn, and daughters, Marion and Rebecca Ann.
Family and Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East, South Temple, Salt Lake City, on Sunday, March 23rd, from 6-8 pm, and Monday from 10:00 to 10:45 at the Kenwood Second Ward prior to funeral services. Funeral services will be held Monday March 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Kenwood Second Ward Chapel, 3080 South 1765 East, Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
