Stewart Cottam Sanderson

1942 ~ 2016

Stewart Cottam Sanderson was born September 27, 1942 to Ivan L. and Glenna C. Sanderson, the oldest of 6 children. He died July 25, 2016 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease).He is survived by His mother, age 95; siblings Ivan D. \"Doug,\" (Venna); Eric M., (Joan); Jon R. (Jihong); and Jan Taylor (Harry); andnumerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews whom he loved. Stewart was preceded in death by his father and a younger sister, Steffanie.

He obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees in Botany at Brigham Young University and the Ph.D. degree in Botany at the University of Texas at Austin. He served post-doctoral research associate positions at the University of England, Liverpool, and at Brigham Young University. He was employed at the Shrub Sciences Laboratory, U.S. Forest Service, in Provo, Utah. He retired in 2008 but continued working for as long as he was able. He was a careful researcher and field worker and authored or co-authored a hundred scientific publications. A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in numerous positions throughout his life and was a High Priest. He served in the Spanish-American LDS Mission in Texas and New Mexico and spoke fluent Spanish. He performed field work in Bolivia, Argentina, China and the American Southwest.
