Kathryn Tuttle Howell

1931 ~ 2017

On July 21, 2017, the grand reunion for Zina Kathryn Tuttle Howell began with her husband Varon, her parents, Jesse and Ona, her siblings Merilee and Stewart, and innumerable loved ones who've already completed their mortal adventure. Kathy, a dear friend and teacher for nearly 38 years, taught kindergarten and 1st grade at Eastwood and Howard R. Driggs Elementary Schools. Kathy was passionate about teaching children to read, which she did with great finesse. Born in Castle Dale, UT on June 27, 1931, her parents instilled in her a love of learning ‚ a gift enjoyed by all of her posterity. Kathy graduated with a Bachelors' degree from her beloved BYU, where she met Varon, the love of her life. The two were married on September 5, 1952, in the Manti Temple, and spent 58 years together before Varon's passing in 2011. Active members of the LDS church and their community, the inseparable couple lived in Salt Lake City and raised three children; Scott (Linda Skanchy), Karen (Morgan Brown), and Amy (John Oglesby). Kathy and Varon were rarely apart, enjoying activities ranging from motorcycle trips, tennis, BYU basketball and football games, Utah Jazz games, and the Symphony. The two were blessed with 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Kathy dearly loved her sisters, Ruth Menzies and Dixie Lane. The three of them cherished time spent together traveling, visiting, or simply talking on the phone. Kathy's love and light lives on in the legacy of her family and friends. Kathy will surely be missed but we know that in the gospel of Jesus Christ, there are no goodbyes‚Ķonly until we meet again. Friends and family are invited to the viewing on Wednesday, August 2nd from 6 ‚ 8 pm at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, SLC. The funeral will be held at the Cottonwood Creek Ward, 1250 East 4800 South, SLC, on Thursday, August 3rd at 11am with a viewing one hour prior to services. Interment at Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road, Sandy. Thank you to the entire Sunrise Assisted Living Community, Carole Ferguson and the hospice team for the amazing love and care for Kathy. You are all heaven-sent! In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund. As Kathy would often say, "Readers are Leaders." Condolences may be offered online at www.LarkinMortuary.com
