Jean Richardson Sorensen

1921 ~ 2016

Jean Richardson Sorensen, our loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2016 at the age of 95. Jean was born January 1, 1921, in Salt Lake City to Jean and Henry Richardson. She was the first baby to be born that year at the old Holy Cross Hospital.

Jean grew up in the Harvard-Yale area of Salt Lake. She attended Roosevelt Jr. High, East High, and completed her education at the University of Utah, where she was affiliated with the Pi Phi sorority, where she served as president. She graduated with a degree in Elementary Education and Library Science.

She married her best-friend and sweetheart, Edward Douglas Sorensen on May 9, 1944, later solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple. Jean was a faithful, active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints until her passing. She served in many callings throughout her life including, Primary, Young-Women (Mutual) and Relief Society. Together with her husband Doug, they served as hostesses at the Church Office Building, and what was supposed to be 1 year of service turned into 13 years of service that they loved doing together each week. In addition to her family and church callings, she enjoyed her friends in the numerous clubs she belonged to: Dinner set, Classics Club, Monday Bridge Club, and Sewing Club. She was also a member of the D.U.P. She enjoyed entertaining, especially making her famous Sunday meals for her family. We will all miss mom greatly, but it gives us comfort to know that she is finally happy and at peace with her eternal companion.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband Doug, whom she has deeply missed for the last 12 years, her sister Susan, her brothers George and Dow. She is survived by her children, Shirley (Jack) Oman, E. Douglas, Richard (Ann), Robert (Dana), sisters; Martha Salthouse, Dorothy Knudson, 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Sunrise of Sandy, for their tender loving care for the last 7 years. The staff loved mom and her beautiful smile as much as she loved them. We would also like to thank Jolene of Solstice Hospice for her compassionate care as well.

A viewing for family and friends will be held Saturday, May 21st at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, from 9:30-10:45 a.m. A short service will follow. Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Ave and N street, SLC, UT.
