Birgit Elisabeth Wallander Stuart

1923 ~ 2017

Birgit Elisabeth Wallander Stuart was born on January 14, 1923 in Eskilstuna, Sweden to Harry Olsson and Thyra Amalia Charlotta Wallander. She became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at age 23 and soon after World War 2, immigrated to the United States with a small group. Birgit kept up on her Swedish by doing crossword puzzles and reading magazines in her native language. Birgit met and married her husband, Edward "Eddy" Stuart in 1953 and enjoyed their 14 years together before he died suddenly. She worked throughout her life, including at a cookie and a tamale factory. Birgit remained active well into retirement, caring for her yard, working on puzzles and walking regularly in the neighborhood. She served in many callings in the church, including as a part time missionary in the Family and Church History Mission for 8 years, but the longest and most enjoyable was ward librarian, where she served for over 40 years. Although she didn't have a lot of family, she \adopted\ and was adopted by many who are considered family. Her positive outlook and sense of humor was a magnet for those around her.

She is survived by her brother, Birger, Sweden, stepson James Duval Stuart, California, stepdaughter, Sharon Louise Decker, Washington.
