Joseph Fielding Nelson

1930 ~ 2015

On Tuesday evening, May 26, 2015, our husband, father, grandfather and dear friend Fielding Nelson, moved on to his next highly anticipated adventure. Born April 20, 1930, to Nora Cannon Nelson and Joseph Smith Nelson in Salt Lake City, Fielding graduated from East High in 1947, served a mission in France for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and received a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Utah in 1954. He married Carolyn Boyer in the Salt Lake Temple December 29, 1954. After two years of military service in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps in Europe, they returned to Salt Lake City where Fielding began his business career which included employment with Western Steel Company, KSL Television, and Gillham Advertising.

In 1973 he established J. Fielding Nelson and Associates as a public relations and advertising firm which evolved into one of the premier executive recruiting firms in the Intermountain area. After selling the company in 1992, he continued working in career coaching and recruiting as well as serving for two years as director and faculty member of the Management Department at LDS Business College.

A devoted member of the church, Fielding served as president of the French East Mission from 1967-1970, and also as Bishop, High Councilor and Sunday School General Board Member. For years he taught everything from gospel doctrine, mission and temple preparation to primary. His love of teaching and of his missionaries was surpassed only by his love for Carolyn and his family.

He found deep satisfaction in assisting others with their belief in God, personal or family difficulties, and employment. He was intrigued and humbled by nature and her creatures, considering these a magnificent and irrefutable expression of God\s love. He was most content when out in nature, accompanied or alone:

At the song of a bird,

The caress of the breeze,

Bright stars in night skies,

Or the fragrance of trees...

The free-flowing stream,

Those crisp autumn days,

The pink clouds of dawn,

Or the sunset\s last rays.

I\m enjoying them too

From some heavenly hill.

‚Ä®Just think of me there ‚

And loving you still.

Fielding is survived by his sweetheart and dearest friend Carolyn, their children, Mark (Cynthia) Nelson, Christian (Lori) Nelson, Heather Nelson (Peter) Cooke, Bruce Nelson (Rob Andreasen), Josh (Holly) Nelson, Nathan (Nancy) Nelson, Andrew (Janie) Nelson, Angela Nelson (Marc) Jewell, Rosie Nelson (Trent) Kaufman, and Philip Nelson, along with 35 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
