Fred William Longhurst

1929 ~ 2014

Fred William Longhurst passed away on July 21, 2014 at his home in Murray, Utah surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Woodruff, Utah on April 20, 1929 to George Leonard and Ruth Annie Mason Longhurst. Fred was 85 years old at the time of his death. He grew up on his father's farm in Woodruff, milking cows, stacking hay and helping to herd cattle. He graduated as valedictorian of his class from South Rich High School and served for two years in the East Central States Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Upon his return he married Arvilla June Lisenbee of Baxter, Kentucky in June of 1952 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised four children. Fred graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in chemical engineering and worked as an engineer for Eimac and Varian Medical Systems for 36 years. He traveled throughout the United States and to Mainland China overseeing the production of a line of electron tubes he designed.

Fred was a dedicated member of the LDS Church serving in many callings, including gospel doctrine teacher, executive secretary, high councilman and temple worker in the Jordan River Temple. His passion was doing family history. He researched and submitted family names to the temple for ordinance work throughout his life.

After the death of his first wife, Fred married Cristin Dapper in the Salt Lake Temple on March 30, 2002. He proved himself to be a cheerful, gracious and hard-working man who sought to be a friend to everyone he met.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, parents and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, Cristin, Faye Ball, his sister, Robert Longhurst, his brother, his four children, Catherine Meyer, F. Nolan Longhurst (Christina), Byron L. Longhurst (Thalea), Jill and three step-sons, Curtis Corser, Grant Corser (Jodi), A. Buckley Corser (Kim), grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 25, 2014 at the Park Ward Chapel, 5600 South 495 East at 11:00. A viewing will be held prior to the services at 9:30 in the Park Ward Relief Society Room. Interment will be at the Murray City Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff at Superior Heath Care and Hospice for their excellent service.
