On August 28, 2013, surrounded by friends and family, Robert Hoggan Rose died from complications related to the treatment for a rare T-cell lymphoma, which he confronted with courage and dignity.
Bob was born February 24, 1946, to Frederick E. Rose and Leah Hoggan Rose in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from Highland High School in 1964 and obtained a Bachelors of Science from the University of Utah in 1971. He was an active member and alumnus of Kappa Sigma, Delta-Sigma Chapter, where he first met many of his closest friends.
After graduating college, Bob entered the financial services industry, where he worked for 45 years, spending the last 39 years at Morgan Stanley and its predecessor firms, including Dean Witter Reynolds. He was a member of the Chairman's Club for 23 consecutive years and cultivated deep and long-lasting relationships throughout every level of the firm. He was the consummate professional and a willing mentor to so many throughout his career. As Bob's long-time friend and colleague, Phillip J. Purcell, former Chairman and CEO of Morgan Stanley stated, "Bob was one of the most talented and admired financial advisors in the industry. He was respected and beloved by his clients and colleagues." Bob took great pleasure in his work and happily spent his last day alive at his office.
In addition to his professional achievements, Bob was an active and generous member of the community. He served on the National Advisory Councils of the University of Utah and David Eccles School of Business and Boards of Directors for Ballet West, The Children's Center, Holy Cross Hospital (Chair), the Morgan Stanley PAC, Museum of Fine Arts, Prevent Blindness of Utah (Chair), Red Butte Garden (Chair), Ronald McDonald House Charities, Salt Lake Acting Company, Salt Lake Honorary Colonels, Utah Symphony, and University of Utah President's Club (Chair). He was a member of the Alta Club and Salt Lake Country Club.
He was also a long-time friend and supporter of the Crimson Club Scholarship Program. Another close and long-time friend, Dr. Chris Hill, Athletic Director of the University of Utah said of Bob, "His passion for the University was made clear by his genuine and energetic involvement in so many aspects of the institution he loved. The University is a better place because of Bob."
Bob was a loyal friend, sage counselor, and gracious gentleman. He was an engaging, witty, and well-dressed socialite with an uncanny ability to recall names and facts, recount entertaining anecdotes, and offer insightful analyses on a wide range of subjects. As such, he was often the life of any event he attended. He loved good dinners with good friends.
Bob was a passionate skier and, on winter weekends, could almost always be found catching the first chairlift at Deer Valley (where he maintained a perfect season-pass record) and, apr√®s ski, holding court at Stein Eriksen Lodge. He also enjoyed golfing with his friends and picked the perfect moment for his first (and only) hole-in-one ‚ The Bear's Club in Jupiter, Florida. His early and continuing love of cars (Porsches, in particular) is legendary. He lived life with no regrets.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Julianne, who died at birth. He is survived by his brother, Rick (Linda) Rose; his nieces, Allyson (Daron) Cameron and Meredith (Scott) Palfreyman; his grandnieces and grandnephews, Ben, Nick, and Hannah Cameron and Sam and Jack Palfreyman, whom Bob treated as his own children; his "stepson," Christopher M. (Alexandra) Von Maack; his grandchildren, Charles Robert and Juliet Lee Von Maack; and his dear friends, who are too numerous to name here.
Bob's friends and family thank the many experienced, diligent, and caring medical professionals at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Huntsman Cancer Institute, LDS Hospital, Mayo Clinic, Utah Cancer Specialists, and University of Utah who counseled and treated Bob.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held Friday, September 6, 2013, beginning at 4:00 p.m., at the Rose Garden at Red Butte Garden, 300 Wakara Way, Salt Lake City.
