LeRoy M. Nelsen

1920 ~ 2014

LeRoy M. Nelsen, 93, passed away of natural causes on Friday, April 11, 2014 in Salt Lake City, UT with his children by his side. LeRoy was born on June 14, 1920 to George and Mildred Nelsen in Murray, UT. He married Gwen Nelsen on November 4, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple.

LeRoy was a believer in education having graduated from Murray High School and obtaining a bachelors and masters degree from the University of Utah. He taught school for ten years and was a principle in the Salt Lake City School District for over 25 years. His personal motto was, "learn all that you can!"

LeRoy served as secretary to the General's Staff of the 9th Service Command during WW II. At the end of WW II, he was given the opportunity to become a commissioned officer but chose instead to pursue his education at the University of Utah.

One of LeRoy's crowning achievements was the loving service he rendered in caring for his dear wife Gwen during her declining years. Thank you for your tremendous example!

LeRoy was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He willingly served in many capacities and always strived to magnify his callings. He also volunteered his time serving on many education committees and as a board member for the House of Hope Rehabilitation Center. He loved golf, the Runnin' Utes and the Boston Red Sox.

He is survived by his daughter Sherrie Lynn Nelsen of Salt Lake City, UT, his son David (Becky) Nelsen of Salt Lake City, UT, six grandchildren, and eight great-grand children, two brothers, Lloyd Nelsen and George McBride, and one sister, Charlene Sanders. Preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gwen Nelsen and brother Earl Nelsen.

The family expresses gratitude and appreciation to Wentworth at East Millcreek and Valeo Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 11:00 am in the Hillside Stake Center, 1400 South 1900 East , Salt Lake City, UT. A viewing will be held Tuesday, April 15, 2014 from 6 ‚ 8 pm at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South, and Wednesday at the Hillside Stake Center , 9:30 am ‚ 10:45 am.
