Geraldine May Sorenson Howell

1925 ~ 2017

Geraldine May Sorenson Howell peacefully passed away in her sleep on January 16, 2017. She was 92 years old. Geraldine was born January 4, 1925 in Park City, Summit County, Utah to Wallace Oren Sorenson and Alice May Trinnaman Sorenson.

When she was young, her family moved around a few times before finally settling in Salt Lake City, where she attended West High School. Geraldine was an honor student, was a lead in the school Opera and participated in many school activities. She was one of six girls at West High to be given an award for Outstanding Activity. She attended University of Utah for one year. She was a secretary at the Utah State Office of Education until her retirement in 1985.

West High is where she met her future husband, Richard Howell. While Richard was home on leave from the Navy during World War II, they were married and sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 18, 1945. Making Salt Lake City their home, they soon welcomed three children: Paul, Sandra, and Craig.

Geraldine was an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints her entire life and held many callings in the Monument Park 7th Ward. She loved music and singing and was frequently accompanied on the piano by her younger sister, Ruth. Serving and helping others was a lifelong theme in Gerry's life. Reading and Genealogy were some of her favorite pastimes, as well as, spending time making memories with her grandchildren.

Geraldine is survived by her husband, Richard M. Howell; sister, Ruth (Reid) Harper, and children Paul (Maryann) Howell, Sandra (Noel) Johnson, and Craig (Kay) Howell, 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren (another due in March).

Preceded in death by her parents Wallace and Alice Sorenson.
