Calvin Boyd Smith

1923 ~ 2017

Calvin Boyd Smith of Sandy, UT passed away on November 11, 2017. Calvin was born the fourth child of his parents Don Samuel Smith and Adella Struhs Smith September 24, 1923 in Rexburg, Idaho. His early years were spent in Idaho, later relocating with his parents to SLC. Calvin served in the Navy during WWII. He met the love of his live Rachel Davenport, whom he married on August 29, 1944 and was later sealed in the St. George LDS Temple. The couple were married for 73 years. Calvin was a thinker and was prominent in many fields including electronics, chemistry, and engineering. He worked most of his life in the mining industry, retiring from Kennecott Copper.

Calvin is survived by 5 children: Gary Shan (Deloris) Smith; Dana Rae (Ralph) Anderson; Kirk D (Bonita) Smith; Monte Boyd (Sonja) Smith; and Mary Diane (Dennis) Dowdle, 32 grandchildren, 85 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. He was also survived by a sister, Ila (Jack) Hoff. He was preceded in death by his wife Rachel (by 17 days), a daughter Sonya Lu (Frederick) Hale, his parents; 4 brothers, Darrell (Evelyn) Smith, Don (Mildred) Smith, Glen (Mary) Smith, Robert (Doris) Smith; 4 Sisters, Lola (George) Rapich, NeVa (Leon) Gregory, Arlene (Gay) Mower, and LaRane (Bill) Taylor.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017 at the LDS Chapel (Institute Building) at 9501 Poppy Lane (940 East) in Sandy. Friends and family may call on Friday, November 17, 2017 from 6:30-8:00 pm at Larkin Sunset Gardens 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South) in Sandy and on Saturday from 10:30-11:45 am at the chapel prior to the service.
