Maridean Munk Ryberg

1920 ~ 2017

Maridean Munk Ryberg passed away on January 5, 2017, in Salt Lake City at the age of 96. She was born at home in Logan, Utah on February 24, 1920, to Dr. Newel Munk and Ione Reese. Maridean attended Logan High School where she met nine, lifelong friends, called the 9 Million. Throughout the years they traveled, golfed and played bridge always keeping the close bond of friendship. She graduated from Utah State Agricultural College where she was a Chi Omega. In 1941 she married Eric Critchlow Ryberg in the Logan Temple and moved to Salt Lake City where she became a member of the Salt Lake Junior League, volunteer Pink Lady at the University of Utah Hospital and member of the Parley's First Ward.

Maridean loved spending her summers at the Hebgen Lake family cabin. There she raised her boys, drove the family wooden boat—the Maridean R, entertained, tended to her signature red geraniums, picked huckleberries and hiked. She was a strong, active and independent woman with a love for walking, travel and skiing. She ventured from the reaches of Africa to the cold of the Iditarod and celebrated her 80th birthday at Alta where she could finally ski for free.

Maridean is survived by her three sons, Richard N. (Anne) Phoenix OR, Edward M. (Lynne) Evergreen CO, Stephen M. (Claire) McCall ID; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and devoted sisters Veda Mae Romney, Joan M. Gunn, and Jeanette M. Woolley. She was preceded in death by her son Eric Munk Ryberg, husband Eric Critchlow Ryberg, her brother Cleve and sister Renee.

Services will be held at Larkin Mortuary (260 East South Temple) at noon on Friday, January 13, where friends and family may call one hour prior to the services. The family would like to extend appreciation to Maridean's sisters and friends who made her life so enjoyable as well as the staff at The Coventry.
