LeRoy Alma Bruin

1931 ~ 2019

LeRoy Alma Bruin, age 87 passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones May 1, 2019 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born on November 9, 1931 to Barend Bruin and Johanna Willemina Bakker. He married Dorothy Joyce Juliussen on March 22, 1954 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Leroy was a man without guile and will be remembered as one of the kindest people to ever grace the earth. He loved playing games with family members as often as he could. He was also an avid watcher of the Hallmark channel. He loved and missed his wife Dorothy and found comfort in the sentimental movies which he watched on a nightly basis. He Loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Savior was the central focus of his life. He read his scriptures daily and always served faithfully as a Home Teacher and Ministering brother. He was concerned for all and would let no negative influence stay with him.

Roy served as a scout master of troop 79 for many years and valued beyond measure his 19 eagle scouts. Many of his scouts stayed in contact with him throughout the years and held him in high regard for his service to them. Many of these boys grew up to be strong leaders in the church and world.

Roy also served in the US Army as a cook during the Korean conflict from 1951-1953. He was so proud of serving in the United States Army and loved his country. Roy spent much of his service time in Alaska and had many stories of braving the cold weather up there.

One of the outstanding legacies that he left his sons and posterity was his example of serving the Savior by putting Jesus Christ at the center of his life. After serving in the Army he met Dorothy and wanted to get married, but at the same time had a strong desire to serve an LDS mission. Dorothy agreed to marry him and then supported him while he served his mission to Holland. Roy was one of those of the last generation who served as a missionary for more than two years after being married. This example of his service will not be lost on his posterity.

Roy also served as a temple worker for many years. His service in the temple was the highlight of his week during his declining years. It was hard for him when his body would no longer let him serve there. Roy was not a man of many words but of action. He lived a simple but profound life. His sons have no recollection of him ever taking a day off of work. He comes from the dying generation where one would need to be on their death bed to miss a day of work.

Roy is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, his parents Barend and Johanna, His four brothers Stanley, John, Ronald and Jerry. He is survived by his two sons Michael and Gordon, 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday May 8 at the LDS South Mountain Draper stake center located adjacent to the Draper Temple at 11:00 a.m. A visitation will be held on the morning of the funeral from 9am till 10:30am. Interment Larkin Sunset Gardens.
