Merlin Goodwin Patrick

1932 ~ 2016

Scooter Patrick passed away in his home with loved ones by his side on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 after a difficult battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He was born on December 30, 1932 in Hollywood, California to George Loren Patrick and Cornelia Ercell Wilson. He was the oldest of two children, his younger sister being Susann Baker. They learned the value of hard work at a young age. He worked many different neighborhood jobs throughout his youth. He grew up in Manhattan Beach, California. He graduated from Redondo High School in 1951. He spent many of his pre-teen years as a beach bum, body surfer, pier fisher, window washer for the downtown businesses, and had a paper route. He was always working with his hands building things, fixing things or taking them apart.

He got his junior driver's license at the age of 14 which started his love for automobiles. His first car was a 1936 Ford Coupe. In High School he joined the Naval Reserve, and after he graduated, he began active duty and was sent to the USS Weeden (DE-797) in Long Beach, California. He was a radar man as a 3rd class petty officer, and in 1953 he was discharged from active duty.

In 1956 he became involved with an organization called Road Race Training Association (RRTA) and "was bitten by the racing bug". He raced all over the world in LeMans, Seabring, CAN AM and the James Garner Racing Team. After many years of racing for PAM, Porsche, Otto Zipper, Toyota Motor Sports, Don Burns, Carroll Shelby, Sports Car Club of America and many others, he met his wife to be Cathy Clark. They met while Scooter was instructing a Porsche Owner's Club Event and taught Cathy how to race her Porsche 914. Prior to them meeting, Scooter had two children from a previous marriage: Tami Patrick and Tim Patrick.

On December 13, 1971, Scooter was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. On June 22, 1972 Cathy and Scooter were married in Salt Lake City, Utah and sealed for time and all eternity one year later. Together they had three children: Porsche, Tuffer, and Penny. Scooter opened an automobile repair shop in Montclair, California near their home in Upland, California where they lived for 36Ω years. In Upland he established great friendships, enjoyed vintage racing, flying his airplane, and helping and serving others. If Scooter couldn't fix it, no one could. There is not anyone with a stronger will and more stubborn than Scooter Patrick; yet his heart was always supportive of others. He was loved by all who knew him.

Scooter is survived by his Wife Cathy Clark Patrick; Five Children, Tamara Patrick, Timothy Patrick (Paula Patrick), Porsche Lynne Herrmann (Christopher Herrmann), Christopher "Tuffer" Clark Patrick (Staci Patrick), Penny Jayne Patrick Praeger (Kevin Praeger); 12 Grandchildren, Brooke, Hunter, Jhett, Dayton, Samantha, Jordyn, Shaun, Dax, Cooper, Jack, Cameron, and Cory; Sister, Susann Baker.

He is preceded in death by his parents George and Cornelia Patrick, and his granddaughter Faith Kristine.
