Stephen L. Henriod

1948 ~ 2016

Stephen Leonard Henriod died on September 15, 2016, in Salt Lake City. He was the first of six children born to Joseph L. and Lorraine Stephens Henriod, arriving on November 28, 1948, as part of the first wave of baby boomers. He attended schools in Salt Lake City, began hisinveterate reading habit of 2-4 books a week, was doted on by every family dog (especially Zoe), and became the family-driver and errand-runner at age 15 when his mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He earned a juris doctor degree from the University of Utah and practiced law for 19 years until he was appointed to the bench in 1994 by Governor Mike Leavitt. He served as a third district judge until retiring from the bench in 2010. He was instrumental in setting up "Drug Courts" in Salt Lake County, supervising convicted addicts in a school-like setting for "graduation" from addiction. He loved basketball games at the Huntsman Center, golf, jazz music, and had a special touch with babies. After retiring, he took on pro bono work for the indigent, volunteered at Fourth Street Clinic, mediated difficult cases, and practiced law. He kept track of friends. He married Kathleen Schultz and had two sons and a daughter, later divorced. Married Kris Garrison, later divorced. Married Paula Heller. He delighted in his twelve grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Paula; his children: Nate (Mandi Reed), Tom (Ashley Aldous), and Sarah (Spencer Thomas); step-sons Sean Garrison (Bridgett Sorenson) and Cody Bandley; and by twelve grandchildren. His memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at noon with visitations Monday evening from 6:00—8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 11:00—11:45 a.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah.
