Marie Thornton

1928 ~ 2017

Audrey (Violet) Marie Trimming Thornton passed away November 15, 2017, surrounded by loved ones. She was born December 13, 1928, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Albert (Duke) Trimming and Ora Pett Trimming (Simmons, Peterson). She graduated from West High School, Salt Lake City, Utah, in June 1946.

While a teenager Marie worked as an usherette at Studio Theater and as a soda jerk at 6th Ave Drug Store. She also worked in her youth as a checker at the old Grand Central Market and was a messenger at 1st Security Bank.

Marie married Dean C. Thornton December 16, 1946, and traveled with him as newlyweds while he was in the Navy. In 1948 they returned to Salt Lake City and after several moves eventually settled into their home on Bryan Avenue, where Dean, as a Salt Lake City firefighter and Marie as a homemaker raised their family. Marie was very devoted to her home and family and served as PTA chairman for Whittier Grade School in the early 1960s. She was always surrounded by a circle of friends and worked for one of them for 28 years in his pizza booth at the Utah State Fair.

She loved fishing, boating and camping and loved to bowl, play golf and spend time in her gardens, sharing her harvest with friends and neighbors. Marie lived in this home for 65 years and became affectionately known as the Mayor of Bryan Ave.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Dean, grandson Jason Shepherd, granddaughter Cori Shepherd, her mother and father, much loved stepfather Orval Peterson and loving stepmother Melba Trimming. She is survived by children Michael Dean (Colleen), Vicki Mika, Michele Thornton and Brian Marde (Tish), eight grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren, one half brother, Alan Trimming and one half sister, Diane Trimming Joelson.

Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E So Temple, Monday November 27th, from 10:30 a.m. Funeral Service will be at 11:30 a.m. and interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
