Eveline Christine Mertlich McLachlan, beloved mother and friend, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 7:14 pm. She was born August 5, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah and was the youngest and only daughter of Johanna Sophia Christine Schrader and Matthias Anton Mertlich. Both of her parents emigrated from Germany in 1910.
She was married to and preceded in death by her sweetheart and beloved husband, Nephi William (Bill) McLachlan. She was also preceded in death by her 4 brothers; Matthias Paul (Paul), Wilford William (Bill), Hyrum Frederick George (Hy), and Melvin Arnold (Melly) Mertlich.
Eveline is survived by her daughter, Christine Lee (Teena) Taylor and husband David of Mt Hood Parkdale, Oregon, Craig William and his late wife Kim, James Brent (Jim) and wife Sue of Salt Lake City, 16 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
As a young woman Eveline worked at various jobs including at a lodge in the Grand Canyon, the Paris Store, the Employment Security Agency, the State Legislature and ZCMI. At ZCMI she worked an elevator operator, where she met Bill, modeled for the Fur and Better Dresses Dept.
As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bill and Eveline served together for two years as tour guides on Temple Square and served a full-time mission together in Freiburg, East Germany as directors of the Temple Visitors Center, a calling they both loved and enjoyed.
Eveline was a beautiful, cheerful woman who was always open and talkative with those around her. She liked to practice her German with anyone with a German accent. She was always happy, optimistic, and had a smile that was ever present. She will be sorely missed by her family and those who knew her.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 1, 2014 at the Holladay 3rd Ward, 4568 South Holladay Boulevard, at 11:00 am. There will be a viewing held Thursday evening at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South, 6-8:00 pm as well as from 9:45-10:45 am prior to the services at the church.
Eveline's family would like to share their appreciation to all those who have been so kind and helpful to her and to her family at this time.
