Orin Edward Ogilvie MD

1920 ~ 2015

Orin Edward Ogilvie passed away peacefully at his home in Salt Lake City on May 8, 2015 at the age of 94. He was born September 20, 1920 in Salt Lake City to Orin Author Ogilvie and DeVera Orrock, and was the second of their three children.

Dad lived most of his early life in Salt Lake City except for two years in Philadelphia where his father completed the last two years of his medical training. At East High School he was active in R.O.T.C. and was captain of the rifle team during his third year. After high school Dad attended the University of Utah, graduating with a BA in anatomy in 1942. During the summers he worked at a service station and assisted his father as a technician at the Wasatch Pathologic Laboratories.

Dad was inspired by his father to become a medical doctor when he was seven years old. In fulfillment of that dream, he had the distinction of graduating in the first four-year class of the University of Utah College of Medicine in 1944. After medical school, Dad interned in Portland, Oregon, followed by general residency training at two Salt Lake City Hospitals. His pathology residency training took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the VA Hospital Center and the Marquette University College of Medicine. Most of Dad's professional career was spent as the owner and director of the Wasatch Laboratories where he was engaged in the private practice of pathology. He also served overseas in Europe and stateside as an Army Medical Corps Officer. Dad worked hard at his chosen profession and was well respected by his colleagues and employees.

While on active duty in Europe, Dad was injured in a jeep accident that necessitated his early return to the United States. While convalescing from his injuries at Bushnell General Hospital in Brigam City, he met Ruth Madsen, the beautiful young physical therapist who he later married. He and Ruth were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 8, 1948. They spent over 61 happy years together and were blessed with seven children.

Dad had a number of interests that he enjoyed throughout his life, including photography, target shooting, and woodworking. He was an excellent marksman and achieved the designation of distinguished rifleman. Dad was also an accomplished woodworker who could design and build superb model ships, cars, and other items. But above all, he was a wonderful husband and father to his children. He loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and was unfailing in his support to his children in their school, church, and other activities. He valued education and taught his children the value of hard work. Dad was always steady, well organized, and conscientious in all that he did. His tender support to his wife before she succumbed to cancer was particularly touching. We were fortunate to have Dad as long as we did. We will miss him greatly.

Dad is survived by his seven children, Edward (Carolyn), Carol (Robert), Joan (John), Paul (Tamara), Ralph (Wendy), Scott (Diane), and Jill (John). He has 30 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren. Dad was preceded in death by his wife Ruth, his sister AnnaDe, and his brother Robert.

The family wishes to thank the staff from Rocky Mountain Care Hospice and Beehive Senior Care for their care and service to our father.
