Benjamin Harrison Smith III

1935 ~ 2016

Benjamin Harrison Smith III, 80 years old, passed away peacefully in his sister's home, surrounded by the family he so dearly loved.

Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, brother and friend to many.

Ben was born to Benjamin Harrison Smith Jr and Gladys McDonald (Pam) Smith on May 25, 1935 in Los Angeles California. Ben attended East High School in 1952 until he broke his neck playing Varsity football. In 1954 he joined the Marines and was honorably discharged. Ben married Ann Elizabeth Underwood on September 3, 1955 in Elko, Nevada. Ben was a father to 4 children.

Ben was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Chevy Chase Ward). In 1958, Ben began a 30 year career as a Salt Lake City Police Officer and was later promoted to detective.

He thoroughly loved his work and serving others. Ben enjoyed sculpting, painting, boating and wood working. He enjoyed reminiscing on childhood friends (Keith, Ward and Richard.) His best and lifelong friend Dale Elton was always by his side. Thank you Nancy "Sis" for your loving care and being there. You are loved.

Benjamin is survived by his daughter Sheryl Smith, sons Michael (Suzette) Smith, and Ben (Lee) Smith IV. 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, brother Greg Smith (Littleton Co), and sister Pat Smith. Preceded in death by his parents, wife, son John and grandson.

Memorial Service will be held Friday, May 6, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Larkin Sunset Lawn Chapel. 2350 East 1300 South Friends and family may call 1 hour prior to service. Online condolences can be shared at www.larkinmortuary.com.
