Helen Johnson Hunger

1923 ~ 2014

Helen Johnson Hunger (age 91), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, died from causes incident to age on Dec. 23, 2014. She was born in Salt Lake City on Oct. 11, 1923, to William Robert and Leone Rich Johnson, the youngest of 4 children.

She graduated from South High and Henager Business College, where she met her beloved companion of 56 years, Hans O. Hunger. They were married on March 12, 1943, in the Salt Lake Temple. Hans died in Sept. 1993.

She was active and fulfilled many callings in the LDS church. She retired from the Rio Grande Railroad in 1983, where she had worked for 30 years in various positions. She was a member of Executives Secretaries Intl. and Natl. Assoc. of Railway Business Women.

She and Hans traveled extensively throughout the world and enjoyed many cruises together. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed bowling, dancing, gardening, and was an avid Jazz fan. Helen enjoyed friends and many happy times at Mt. Olympus Senior Center. She resided at Cottonwood Creek Retirement community for the past 9 years.

She is survived by son Robert (Kim) Hunger of Ogden; six grandchildren: Michelle (Mark) Galusha of Ohio; Susan (Robert) Clayton of Riverton; April (James) Ames of Richfield; Lance (Carolyn) Hunger, Lindsey (Brian) Oveson and Heidi (Jake) Horrocks, all of Salt Lake; and 21 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Hans, daughter Janet, brother Kenneth Johnson, sisters Sylvia Beck and Mildred Urien.

A viewing will be held Saturday, December 27, 2014 from 10-11:30 am at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, followed by a graveside service at Murray City Cemetery, 5490 South Vine Street at 12:00 Noon.
