Gene Paul Young

1933 ~ 2017

Gene Paul Young, 83, passed away on February 14th, 2017 after a courageous 15 month battle with cancer. The son of Wilford T. and Ada Asper Young, Gene was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 10, 1933. He married his beloved wife of 65 years, Ila Fackrell, in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1952.

In March of 1951 Gene joined the U.S. Army Reserve and was honorably discharged as Sergeant First Class in March of 1957. He followed in his father's footsteps and joined the Salt Lake City Police Department in August 1955 and became a 3rd generation officer. During his distinguished career, Gene was a national champion in pistol marksmanship and was the police motor sergeant for over ten years. He continued to serve the community of Salt Lake and retired as a Lieutenant in November of 1986.

Gene was a devoted husband and father and enjoyed numerous activities such as woodworking, beekeeping, fly-fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, skiing, running and snowshoeing. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survived by his wife Ila, daughter Lori (Bill), sons Wayne (Jean), David (Debbie) and Gary (Tami), twelve grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and his brother Douglas (Crystal). Preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Hazel and brother William.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 2:30 pm at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Avenue "N" Street. A visitation will take place at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, from 1:00 ‚ 2:15 pm prior to services.
