Romney McGill Stewart

1947 ~ 2015

Our husband, father, grandfather and uncle passed away peacefully at his home Friday, November 13, 2015.

Romney was a man of unwavering faith and character and uncompromising principles. He was afun-loving, dedicated, and supportive husband and father. He possessed many outstanding qualities and someone that carried a discernable light. He was born in Washington D.C. to George R. and Iva Mildred Stewart on February 15, 1947. He and his older brother spent their childhood in Arlington, VA while his father worked for the US Congress. The Stewart family then moved to Downey, CA where Romney graduated from Downey High School, lettering in football and participating in student government.

Romney attended Cal State University at Long Beach, then left after his sophomore year to serve a church mission in Scotland. Upon returning to school, he served as Regional LDSSA President and joined the Army National Reserve where he served for six years. After graduating with his B.S. degree in Business Administration from Cal State, he then attended graduate school at Brigham Young University where he met his eternal sweetheart, Mayrene Grange, whom he married in the Salt Lake Temple. Romney graduated from BYU with a Master's degree in Public Administration.

Romney worked in California in various management positions for the City of Long Beach, for five years; followed by nearly 29 years working in a number of divisional management positions for Salt Lake County, including Dir. of Solid Waste Management. After his retirement he enjoyed working as a substitute teacher for the Granite School District.

"Papa Bear" was an avid outdoorsman and loved spending his summers at the family "ranch"in Woodland, Utah; where he created fond family memories of fishing, hiking, swimming, horseback riding, playing horseshoes, and spending time with extended family. Romney was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in various leadership capacities in both family and singles wards, including Bishop of the Mt. Olympus 5th Ward. He also enjoyed his time as a volunteer working in the Draper Temple.

Romney was preceded in death by his parents, Brother Charles, (Jamie), two grandchildren Macy and Isaac, and his in-laws Russell D. and Helen F. Grange. He is survived by his wife Mayrene and their four children; Romney M. Stewart II (Kristin), Rachele S. Morgan (Reggie), Cameron G. Stewart (Amy), Charlene Barber (Matt) and niece Taylor Stewart.

A viewing will be held at Larkin Sunset Gardens on Friday, Nov. 20 from 6 ‚ 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Newcastle Ward at 2180 East Meadowlark Way (9020 So) in Sandy, UT with a viewing prior to the service from 12:30 ‚ 1:30 p.m. Internment will be at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E.
