Lucille Wilcken Snelgrove

1920 ~ 2017

Lucille Wilcken Snelgrove, age 96, died March 7, 2017 of heart failure. She was a mother of nine, grandmother of 31, and great-grandmother of 58. She had many titles, and was known by many of her great-grandchildren simply as "Great." She was born July 26, 1920 in Salt Lake City, the youngest child of August Sansom and Mary Lucille Patten Wilcken.

Great married Joel Barr Snelgrove May 16, 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple. He died thirty years ago in February, 1987. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings in Relief Society, Young Women and Sunday School. One of her favorite callings was as a leadership missionary with Barr in the Eighth Ward, Liberty Stake. Great volunteered for several years as a mentor at Dilworth and Edison Elementary Schools. But her greatest joy was her family.

Great is survived by eight of her children and their spouses: Jay and Patt, Brent and Linda, Lee and Jody, Pat, LuAnn and Chad, Mike and Annette, Scott and Deborah and Janie and Ralph; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Mona S. Layton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Barr; daughter Linda; great-grandchildren Lauren Jane Varner and Tanner Joseph Robbins; brothers Tom and Pat Wilcken, and sister Mary, who died the day Great was born.

We express heart-felt appreciation for Nubia and Brock from hospice, for their tender care so Great could remain at home; and to our sister, Janie (and Ralph), for her constant and loving care over many years.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 12:00 noon at the Parleys 4th Ward Chapel, 1870 Parleys Canyon Blvd., where friends and family may visit from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
