Penelope Amaija-Anne Smith, 22 days old, was born kicking and waving her arms on July 18th, 2019. Our little Poppy came into the world 17 weeks early. She was taken immediately to the NICU where her father, Jason Smith, was the first to see her. Poppy loved to keep the nurses on their toes. At 3 days old, Poppy pulled out her breathing tube and gave everyone a scare. At 9 days old Poppy got to do kangaroo care for the first time with her mother, Angelic Smith. Poppy did so well while being held the nurses didn't want to return her to the isolette. Poppy enjoyed showing everyone how flexible she was during her cares. She would stretch her little legs out and reach up to her tubes. Poppy instantly became a favorite with the NICU staff. Poppy was gaining weight appropriately and all the nurses kept saying she doesn't realize she is small. One thing that Poppy loved was to suck on her thumb or fingers. Anytime she could sneak her hand out of the blanket, her fingers were in her mouth. Poppy loved having her mom and dad at her cares. As soon as she would hear their voices she would try to move her head and eyes to the sound. Poppy put up a good fight in the 22 days she was with us. At the end she couldn't fight any longer. She passed away on August 9, 2019. She gave her family such joy to watch her thrive and grow. Poppy had many people that had not met her but she felt all the love they had for her. Poppy is survived by her parents Jason and Angelic Smith, her two sisters, Lexi and Everly. Her grandfather Morgan Smith. Her Aunt, Maija Sorensen (Don). Her uncle, Kim Smith. Cousins, DJ and Nick Sorensen, Brayden and Madison Smith. She is preceded in death by her grandmother Wilma Smith, her uncle Brandon Smith, and her big brother Finley Smith.
