Derral Gene Sorensen Jr. loving son, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend passed away May 5, 2017 in Murray, Utah. He was surrounded by his family. He fought a valiant and heroic, 3 month fight against stage 4 pancreatic cancer that had spread throughout his body.
Derral was born December 27, 1958 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the son of Derral and Annie Sorensen. He grew up in the Sugar House area. He attended Highland High School and SLCC, earning a degree in computer programming. He was a loyal employee at the State of Utahfor 22 years.
He loved spending his time boxing, golfing, drawing, writing, running, and cycling. He enjoyed baking and had a passion for coffee. He had an affinity for elephants. Most importantly, he loved being a grandpa and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his parents: Derral and Annie Sorensen. Children: Autumn (Chris) Bennett, Aubrie (Matt) Thurber, Kelsey (Jordan) Ellis, and Zachary Sorensen. Grandchildren: McKenna Bennett, Hunter Bennett, Easton Bennett, Holden Thurber, Aleah Ellis, and Kyson Ellis. Brother: Scott (Celeste) Sorensen. Sister: Joanna (Bret) Perkins. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, brother Anthony (Tony) John Sorensen, and grandson Zane Anthony Thurber.
A viewing will be held at Larkin Sunset Lawn 2350 E 1300 S, Salt Lake City, UT on Friday, May 12, 2017 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Saturday, May 13, from 9:45 am to 10:45 am. Funeral services will also be held at Larkin Sunset Lawn Saturday, May 13 at 11:00 am. Interment will be at the Murray City Cemetery 5490 S Vine St, Murray, UT
