Glen Elkins, longtime Salt Lake City resident, passed away on July 28, 2017. Glen was born in Winnsboro, Louisiana, and moved at an early age to Central California. Glen wanted his gravestone to read "He set a good table". Glen was known for many things but his love of fine food and wine was legendary. He married Irene Hillebrand (later divorced) and together they traveled the world and successfully raised four talented and accomplished adults ‚ Steven (Judy), Bloomington, MN; Doug, Folsom, CA; Karen Elkins, Walsenburg, CO; Michael (Clarann), Littleton, CO. He was blessed with six loving grandchildren: Michelle Brenner (Yoni), Danielle, Alex, Denis, Austin Herrmann, Josie Reading ‚ one great grandson, Alon Brenner. Brother Robert Bergstrom (St. Augustine, FL), his children and grandchildren. All of whom he enjoyed and loved. At family gatherings, they don\t take pictures of each other, they take pictures of whatever food is being served. Glen was proud of his service to the country in the US Navy. He has enjoyed visits with all of his family in the last few months.
Glen married Diane Hodgson in 1992 at which time he inherited a whole new crew of people to love and feed ‚ too many to list but all added to his life in significant ways. Special friends, Bruce and Maureen Reading, have been especially helpful in the last years as Glen\s health declined. Granddaughter Josie, because of her geographical closeness, was able to travel with him for many years and was able to help him with sweet visits, errands and medical appointments.
He had a long and successful career living in Europe for six years in Chateauroux, France, and Seville, Spain. He lived on Kwajalein Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands; Princeton, New Jersey; Oakland, California; and Salt Lake City. He was a member of Willow Creek Country Club for over 20 years and served a stint as its president.
Glen has made the transition to the next phase where he has a chef\s kitchen, hits par on every hole, everybody loads the dishwasher from the back, and there are incessant political arguments.
No services are planned. A private graveside service will be held. He will be buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Salt Lake City. Enjoy the drink of your choice and toast a life lived to the fullest.
