Thomas Patrick Garahana, age 85, died peacefully in his home in Kearns, Utah on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 of natural causes.
"Tom" was born on January 23, 1931 in Bingham Canyon, Utah to John Joseph and Marcelina Jayo Garahana. He was a member of the Armed Forces and proudly served in the Korean War. He married the love of his life, Joan (Nell) Nielsen in 1954. They moved to Kearns, Utah where they raised five children. Tom worked at Kennecott for 43 years and looked forward to socializing at the Wednesday lunches after he retired.
He is survived by his sister, Rose Sainsbury and brother, John Garahana and was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his sister, Carmen Mascaro and brother, Paulino Garahana. He was a loving father to DeeAnn (Jerry) Whetstone, Dan (Stephanie) Garahana, Julie (Doug) Schooley, Lori Caldwell, and Larry (Stephanie) Garahana. He was a caring grandpa to 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He was "Uncle Tommy" to many nieces and nephews.
He will be fondly remembered for his tireless service to others; shoveling walks, mowing lawns, and collecting cans for the school and neighbors. He was caregiver to many, always giving selflessly of his time. He was affectionately known as "grandpa" to all the neighborhood kids. He was an example to all who knew him. The family hopes that those who knew him will enjoy a stick of gum in his honor.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy. There will be a viewing from 12:00-1:45 PM that day.
