Dr. Joseph Fyans III

1940 ~ 2017

Dr. Joseph Fyans III, 76, of Salt Lake City, Utah peacefully passed away on Monday, August 21, 2017.

Joseph was born December 13, 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah; the son of Joseph Fyans II and Leone Slater. Growing up in Salt Lake City he excelled in baseball, academia, and worked hard alongside his father. After graduating from West High School, he served an honorable full-time mission for the LDS church in the Central British Mission. After he returned, he married Carol Silver and completed his bachelor's degree from University of Utah. He later received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from University of Southern California. "Fight on for old SC!" He and Carol were blessed with four children during their 18 years of marriage.

In 1984, he married Laurie Ann Bowen. Together they had three children and later settled for 24 years in Vancouver, Washington. Joseph was a beloved dentist and known for singing songs and telling jokes to his patients to help them relax. He retired in 2000 after suffering from several strokes. His loyal wife, Laurie, lovingly cared for him throughout his illness until she passed away in 2013. Despite his health concerns, his testimony of Christ's Atonement inspired him to always remain optimistic and humorous. His love for poetry, music and reading continued throughout his life. Regardless of his strokes, he continued to memorize and recite poetry, quotes, and scriptures. His personal library flourished with books that he freely shared with his community. Joseph deeply valued his relationships and remained close with many of his friends from his youth. He is remembered as often saying his greatest joy in life is being the proud father of his seven resilient children.

He is survived by seven children; Tiffiny Silver Fyans Duncan (Kenny), Christine Silver Fyans, Joseph Clark Fyans (Danielle), Clark Silver Fyans, Michael Fyans, Danielle Hayes (Niel), and Rebecca Fyans Helton (Briggs), grandchildren; Davis, Sophia, Gabrielle, Evangeline and Burton, and siblings; Renee Christiansen and Jack Fyans.

He was preceded in death by Carol Silver and Laurie Bowen; parents; Joseph Fyans II and Leone Slater; sibling, Diane Roos, and grandson, Ammon Fyans.
