Sondra Kathleen Hess Schumann passed away peacefully on March 30, 2016. She was born December 31, 1939 to Fred Sverre Forwald Hess and Norma Vance Hess. When Sondra's mother passed away when she was nine years old, her Father remarried Solveig Astad. Solveig Astad Hess and Sondra became mother and daughter. Sondra grew up in Salt Lake City, attended Ensign Elementary, Bryant Jr. High and graduated from West High School in 1958. She later attended the University of Utah.
While attending the "U" she met the love of her life John M. Schumann. They were married in 1961. Together they were blessed with two children Jon and Stacie. As a family they took many vacations to Mazatlan Mexico and San Jan Capistrano, California and St. George.
Sondra worked at Wolfe Sporting Goods, in various positions from 1959 until they closed their doors. She made numerous friends there and long-time relations that she will cherish.
Sondra had a compassionate selfless attitude and had many opportunities to help others. She loved serving the women of her ward and neighborhood as the Relief Society President. She worked and volunteered in various capacities but her most cherished place was at the LDS hospital, creating experiences for the people who passed through the doors to feel comfortable. Her compassionate selfless attitude made it a perfect fit. She loved the people she met and her coworkers.
She loved going on lunch dates with her friends and family. She loved spending time in her garden and enjoyed the seasons. She loved reading books and fashion magazines. Spending time with her children and grandchildren and supporting them in their various activities.
Sondra was an example of class, style and grace from her younger years to her last days. Her grandchildren called her Gygi, Glam Gram, Grandma Schu, Groovey Grandma, Glamma, Gram Gram and Grandma Sparkle.
She has left a legacy of service to family, friends, church, neighbors and community. We hope that her love of service and caring about the needs of others will continue throughout many generations to come.
Sondra is survived by her children Jon (Penni) Schumann and Stacie (David) Sturt, and her grandchildren Katherine and Stephen Schumann, Benton (Grace) Sturt, Sarah, Emma and Olivia Sturt.
Sondra was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Norma Hess, stepmother Solveig Astad Hess and her husband John.
Sondra's wish was to have a graveside service which will be held on Saturday April 9th at 11:00 am in the Salt Lake Cemetery (11th Avenue and east of Terrace Hills Drive) a Celebration open house will be held in her honor after the service at 499 Northmont Way. Larkin Mortuary is assisting with the Graveside Service.
