Doris Elizabeth Brown

1921 ~ 2019

Doris E. Brown passed away on Monday, July 29, 2019, after a short illness. She was a mother, aunt, and precious friend to all. Doris was born October 2, 1921 in Sacramento California to James Lester and Blanche Emerson Hapgood. She was the oldest of three children in a united and happy family.

Doris was an accomplished piano player and was often asked to accompany many performers. While volunteering to play for the USO, she met her husband, Sargent William "Bill" Berkeley. They married February 20, 1944. They had a son, James William Berkeley. They also raised Bill's niece, Patsy Ann Teubert as their own. Bill passed away in 1963 and Doris married Archie Lee Brown Jr in 1967. They were married 10 years before he passed away.

Doris worked in a variety of areas during her life. Upon completion of college she went to work for the Sacramento Police Department, becoming one of the few women police officers in her day. She later worked as a medical technician for the Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame, California. After her second husband passed away, she became an Administrative Assistant in the offices of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints until she retired.

She lived in her home in Salt Lake City for over 45 years. She developed amazing talents during her lifetime. She was a beautiful artist selling much of her work. She loved to knit and fashioned many lovely sweaters and scarfs and even a beautiful dress. She later learned needlepoint and created many spectacular pillows, pictures and Christmas stockings for family and loved friends. She was a loving, talented and independent woman.

Doris was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in a variety of callings including a temple ordinance worker in the Laie Hawaii Temple and a Relief Society President. She completed an amazing amount of genealogy and temple work researching her family line back to the 12th century.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Bill and Lee, her son James and sister Carol Frost. She will truly be missed by her daughter Patsy Ann Teubert (Dick), her brother, James Hapgood and his three daughters (Janelle, Sharon, and Karen). Daughter-in-law Kathy Berkeley, nephew, Bill Lage, niece Karen Despain (Bruce) and family, and Roger and Leslie Keddington and family.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service celebrating Doris's life at the Monument Park Stake Center (1320 South Wasatch Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Saturday, August 10, 2019 at 11:00 am with a visitation a half hour prior. Interment at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, California. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Humanitarian Fund or Missionary Fund.
