Jay David Gurmankin

1947 ~ 2016

Jay wanted to tell you that he has left the party. He didn't want to, but he knew it would happen sooner or later and he figured we could all carry on without him. We will, but it won't be near as much fun.

Jay was a beautiful man who lived a meaningful life against odds that would have held others back. Despite paralyzing MS, with which he tussled for over 30 years, Jay continued to love his daughter unreservedly and practiced law brilliantly. He was the best of fathers and the best of friends. In spirit, he rode equestrian mounts with Natalia at the highest level of competition. When not practicing law and mentoring at Holland and Hart, he devoted his time to following his daughter's events and working tirelessly for the Utah Chapter of the MS Society on whose board he served as Trustee and from whom he received multiple recognitions. Nevertheless, with a twinkle in his eye, he liked to brag that he spent his leisure time on fine wine, beautiful women, sports, movies, gambling and the rest he "wasted."

Daughter Natalia, son Tommy and all the rest of us will miss him dearly but we will have to be content with having known, loved and celebrated life with one of the special souls. We love you, Jay and will cherish the memories. You are truly one of the greats.

A celebration of Jay's life will be held at Red Butte Garden, Monday, March 7th between 5 and 8 pm. At his request, don't wear black but do wear a smile. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Utah Chapter of the MS Society.
