Our sweet mother, FRANCES FELSHAW SHUTTS passed away on Sept. 18, 2016 in Riverton, Utah. She leaves behind five children, Cindy Owens (Ben), Wayne (Carol), Paula Ross (Randy), Bobbie Thorne (David) and Jim (Roselyn), 18 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Words cannot express how much we will miss her.
Frances was the youngest of 5 children, Lela McBride (Burt), Beulah (Jack Daley), DeVar (Nadine Pomeroy), and Olive (Elman Pace). She was born on April 7, 1926 in Pima, Arizona to David and Clarissa Norton Felshaw. She was 90 years old.
When she was very young her family moved to Safford, Arizona, just a few miles East of Pima where she started school at the age of 4. Her first teacher was her oldest sister, Lela. She graduated from Safford High School in 1942 and the following September, entered what is now known as, Arizona State University, in Tempe. She graduated in 1947 with a teaching degree and married Clarence Francis (Frank) Shutts on August 15, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her first teaching job was teaching first grade in the Mesa, Arizona School Dist. Later she quit teaching school to raise her children only to return when her youngest child entered school. She taught kindergarten at Gladstone Elementary School in LaVerne, Calif. retiring at the age of 62.
Frances was active, from childhood, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As an adult, she served as a Sunday School teacher, Jr. Sunday School Supervisor, Primary teacher, Primary President, Relief Society President, and early morning Seminary teacher. She served as an ordinance worker in the Los Angeles California Temple for 10 years. To her children, she was a wonderful mother and teacher. When Frances was 90, her children moved her to a care facility in Riverton, Utah where she could be given the care that she needed. She passed away from the effects of her age.
Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral service for Frances on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 2:00 pm at the Sego Lilly Ward building located at 9824 S. Flint Dr., Sandy, Utah. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00-1:45 pm. Interment will follow at Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery, 1950 E. Dimple Dell Rd. (10600 S.) Sandy, Utah.
