Nanette Smith Michie

1938 ~ 2017

Nanette was born May 11, 1938, to Lynn and Bernice Smith. She grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from East High School. She met her lifelong sweetheart, James R. Michie, at Roosevelt Junior High. Nanette graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in English Literature with a minor in French and received a Teaching Certificate. She was the Colonel in the Angel Flight USAF ROTC. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority where she met many lifelong friends. After graduating in 1960, Nanette and Jim were married in the Salt Lake Temple and moved to Palo Alto, CA, to pursue further education. Eventually, they settled in Salt Lake City where they raised 5 children. Nanette loved serving in her Church in many positions and in 1998 ‚ 2001 served with her husband while presiding over the PA, Philadelphia Mission. She loves piano music, singing, books and staying up late into the night reading. She encourages her children to appreciate music and books as she places a high value on the arts and the importance of education. These became priorities of Nanette's entire family. In 2016, Nanette was awarded, with her husband, the prestigious Camerata Award from the University of Utah School of Music where she served on an Advisory Board for 3 years. She loves spending time in Coronado, CA with family and friends, but always loves returning home to her Avenues home and her Salt Lake friends. Nanette's children agree that she has natural comedic timing and was humorous until the end. They will spend years retelling funny family stories. She has a strong personality and, with wisdom and good judgement, she always knows the right thing to say. Everyone likes being with her. Nanette leaves behind her adoring husband, Jim, her sister Carol Lynn and Brent Dyer, her 5 children and spouses: Michelle Michie and Bob Stringham; Jim Michie, Jr. and Wendy Smith; Trent and Liz Michie; Melissa Michie; and Lochlin Michie and Shellee Woodall.
