Jon Blaine VanWagoner

1944 ~ 2015

Jon Blaine VanWagoner died March 24, 2015 of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) caused by exposure to Agent Orange during his military service in Vietnam.

Born October 28,1944, in Salt Lake City, to Blaine and Fern Burch VanWagoner. He married Kristine Ellsworth on August 27, 1974, in the Salt Lake Temple.

Jon was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served a mission from 1964 to 1966 in the North British Mission. He faithfully served in many leadership positions in the church.

He also served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a Captain in the United States Army. He received several honors and awards during his years of military service including two Bronze Star Medals and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

He graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor\s Degree and a Master\s Degree in Education. After graduation, he taught reading in the Jordan and Salt Lake School Districts for 41 years. During his time as a teacher, he received numerous awards including State of Utah Teacher of the Year, 2004; Sandy Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Month; T. H. Bell Secondary School Recognition Award.

Jon truly loved teaching and was committed to the success of every student. His career as an educator has left a lasting positive impact in the lives of countless students. He loved spending time with his friends and family. He was an extraordinary husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kristine (Tina); three children Mary (Anthony) Romrell, Marcy (Stuart) Fetzer, Maren (Matthew) Ferre; ten grandchildren; Brother, David Vanwagoner; and Sister, Carol Kwant.

Private family graveside services will be held at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, under the direction of Larkin Mortuary.
