  • On Thursday, May 21, 2020, Edith Afton Gines Hartman, sweet mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away at the age of 95.
Edith was the fourth of five children born to Abram Afton Gines and Pryscilla Clegg Gines on September 21, 1924 in Woodland, Utah.
She married Norman Reid Hartman on November 14, 1947, in Salt Lake City, Utah, with their marriage later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.
Edith was an excellent student attending South Summit High School and earning a scholarship to LDS Business College at the age 17, where she majored in business. She retired from the Utah Transit Authority in 1989 where she was employed as the payroll supervisor.
Edith was quite the adventurer and traveled to countless countries and continents. She accompanied the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to Russia, which was the first time they had been invited to sing in that country. She went to a worldwide religious conference in Korea as a representative for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She’s been to Japan and several countries in Europe. Edith even took a trip to the holy lands including Egypt and Israel where she got to see the river Jordan. She saw many wonderful places, but among these, the one she loved the most was going to the Hill Cumorah Pageant in New York year after year as a volunteer missionary.
Edith was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a full-time proselyting mission to the Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, mission from 1989 to 1990. She also served many years as a tour guide on Temple Square and at the Beehive House. She has held numerous callings including Relief Society President for the Parleys 5th Ward. Edith was dedicated to temple work and faithfully served for many years in the Salt Lake Temple. She spent countless hours in genealogy work and was instrumental in the publication of a genealogy book for the descendants of Samuel and Ellen Gines. She was an obedient daughter of our Father in Heaven and loved her Savior, Jesus Christ. The gospel was her guiding light, and anyone that knew her benefited from her strong testimony.
She had many hobbies which included ceramics, sewing and painting.
Edith managed and maintained many rental homes even after age 90, where she could always be found working even on the most difficult of construction projects sometimes to the dismay of her doctor.
Her family was her greatest accomplishment. She and Norman raised three children in a loving and nurturing home. They loved taking family vacations and spending time camping and boating every summer. Edith hosted countless gatherings for friends and family. Christmas was especially memorable where the entire family would gather into her overcrowded house with games, presents and the smells of delicious food coming from the kitchen. She welcomed and offered her home to an untold number of friends from all around the globe where everyone felt accepted and no one left hungry.
Edith is survived by her three children: Craig (Marcia) Hartman, Marilyn (Steven) Petty, and Bart Hartman; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her eternal husband, Norman; one stillborn daughter; her parents, Abram and Pryscilla Gines; her sister, Sarah Lucile Evans; brothers, Ray Gines, Alden Gines and Clyde Gines; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Edith was the last of her family generation to pass through the veil of this life and is most certainly enjoying a joyous reunion with all of them now.
A viewing will be held for friends and family on Friday, May 29, 2020, at Larkin Mortuary, 3688 West 12600 South, Riverton, Utah, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, masks are suggested and social distancing must be observed. A private family funeral will be held on Saturday May 30, 2020. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
The family would like to thank the staff of “The Ridge” and “Brio Hospice” for the loving and compassionate care given to Edith especially during these very difficult past few weeks.

There was never a dull moment when Aunt Edith was around, and she always brought laughter and fun to everything. She was truly my favorite aunt and she is the one that gave me the love for genelogy work. She would drag me uptown before computers to have me help, and took me once to a genelogy family meeting in Woodland. I so love her and will miss her until we see her again. I know she is having a great time on the other side as she was the last to come home to her family. Love you Aunt Edith and look forward to when we see you again.
