Kurt Lee Young

1921 ~ 2016

Kurt Lee Young, 94, on the birthday of his beloved late wife Eloise, September 22, died in Sandy, UT. He survived heart bypass surgery in 1990 and later prostate cancer, but regressed with dementia the last eight years. Kurt was born December 29, 1921 in Huntington, Utah, to Lee E. and Addie K. Young. He married Eloise Ruth Johnson December 15, 1942, in Reno, NV. Their almost 70 year marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.

He was raised in Huntington, Utah. In 1940, his family moved to Ephraim, Utah where he graduated from high school. Kurt joined the National Guard in 1939 and was called to active duty in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army until October 1945. He graduated from Carbon College. He was recalled to active duty in June 1951, during the Korean War and served until June 1953.

Kurt was employed by the Air Force as a small business procurement specialist. He later served as state director of the Small Business Administration. He retired in September 1973, after 30 years of Federal service.

He served on numerous public service boards and six years as an elected Washington County Commissioner during the 1980s. He was a member of the LDS Church where he served as a bishop and as an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake and St. George temples.

Kurt is survived by his sister Nelda (Elmer) Berger, Salt Lake City, three living children, Kimball (Laurel), Salt Lake City, Katherine (James) Hulse, Draper, UT, Nanette Hopkinson, Las Vegas, NV, seven grandchildren, Emmalee, Meredith, AnnMarie, Miles, Becky, Shad and Marci, and 16 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother, sister, a daughter, Pamela, and great grandson, Alex.

A viewing will be held in Kurt's honor Thursday, September 29, 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Garden Mortuary, 1950 East Dimple Dell Rd., (10600 South) Sandy, and a graveside service will be conducted Friday, September 30, 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers take your family to dinner.
