Lorraine Passey Newman

1919 ~ 2014

Lorraine Passey Newman returned home to her Heavenly Father in the early hours of July 21, 2014, her loving daughter, Debbie, by her side. Born April 11, 1919, Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, Lorin and Olive (Sorensen) Passey, younger siblings Hal, Jean (Park), and Reid, adoring husband, Frank Julian Newman, and grandchild, Nathan Eliot Newman.

Lorraine lived a life many would be envious of, but one which she lived with great humility and appreciation. Married to a hard-working, spiritually strong, and attentive husband, she was afforded opportunities to hone her creative talents, becoming quite accomplished at sewing, culinary arts, crochet work, and ceramics. During World War II, while Julian served in the Navy, Lorraine was proud to serve her country as a steno clerk to the Adjunct General at Fort Douglas. Julian whisked her around the world, visiting such places as Europe, China, the Pacific Islands, Egypt, Mexico, and numerous other countries and states, in his desire to see the wonders different countries and cultures had to offer, and she was game to follow him to the ends of the earth. However, when their travel shoes were packed away, Lorraine ensured their home was a place of peace, beauty, and order where they could relax and enjoy their family and friends.

A lifetime avid member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, active member of The Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and passionate in her service to friends, family, and community, Lorraine is lovingly remembered by all those who knew her for her feisty personality, her pride and interest in her family members, and generous spirit.

Lorraine is survived by her two children, Frank Raymond (and Robyn) Newman, Debbie (and Lynn) Cope; nine grandchildren, Krystelyn Newman, Matthew (and Mandy) Cope, Heathor McDonald, Brian (and Stephanie) Cope, Brandi (and Matthew) Wiederhold, Maren (and Clint) Weber, Jeffrey (and Kelly) Cope, Benn Newman, and Megan (and Tyler) Willmore; 22 2/3 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Beth Bradshaw; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends.

Our sorrow is deep to have lost the amazing matriarch of our family, but we are better people for having had her love and influence in our lives.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Chapel, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, Utah. A visitation will be held from 10-10:45 prior to the service. The interment will follow the funeral service.
