Arline Evelyn Otto

1923 ~ 2018

Arline Evelyn Otto died peacefully on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, 9 months after Ed, her husband of 66 years. Arline was born October 2, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio to John and Helen (Durk) Grentzer. After her graduation from St. Augustine Academy for Girls in Lakewood, Ohio, she attended Baldwin Wallace College in Beria, Ohio. Arline was employed at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (later became NASA) where she met Ed Otto. They were wed in 1950 and adopted their son, Mark Edward in 1954. The family traveled extensively to all corners of the world. Trips included the countries of Egypt, Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Switzerland, England, Bolivia, Columbia and more. Skiing and golfing were sports that they enjoyed together and with friends. Tragically, Mark's promising life came to an end at the age of 17 from cancer. After Ed's retirement from NASA, in 1977, Arline and Ed moved to Salt Lake City, where they had enjoyed skiing and golfing on previous trips. They continued their enjoyment of both of these activities well into their 80's!

The Otto's were members of Newcomer's Club and Arline was still a member of Assistance League, where she was recently honored for 30 years of membership. She served them as treasurer and remembered many years of clothing drives helping provide coats for children in need throughout the valley. Arline was also a member of Salt Lake Council of Women. Arline was a parishioner of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, Sandy. Arline and Ed made their home at The Wellington in Holladay since 2013, where Arline was cared for very well there by the professional and caring staff. They were visited often by Arline's 2nd cousin, Roland Allen and his wife Patti, who moved to Salt Lake in 1974. They wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at The Wellington, as well as Utah Home Health and Hospice for all they did to provide absolutely wonderful care, comfort and dignity to Arline during her final months of life.
